Evolving Laws

We don't know everything yet...

In fact, even the basic assumptions of science may need to shift in the coming years in the face of new evidence / discoveries. Willis Harman, for example, discussed the differences between science the old way and the new way.

Where the old Orthodox "Seperatenss" Science assumption is:
"A scientific explanation of a phenomenon consists in relating the phenomenon to increasingly general, fundamental, and invariant scientific laws. Ultimate scientific explanations are in terms of the motions and interactions of fundamental particles and forces."**

The new "Wholeness" Science assumption would be:
"There is no reason to assume that scientific laws are invariant; it seems more plausible that they too evolve. Hence, extrapolation to the big bang may be suspect. Evidence points to consciousness either evolving along with, or being prior to, the material world."**

Indeed, I was able to find a few recent reports of the (empirical) science behind these ideas:
"Some (atomic) fundamentals may change as time goes by"
"Scientists question nature's fundamental laws"
"Laws of physics 'may change'"

The universe is an interesting place.

Busy Bee

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile... Between wedding planning, and thesis writing I've been swamped. I defend Wednesday, exciting! And our wedding is now less than a month away!!

Also, we saved almost $20 on our energy bill this month but switching to compact flourescent lighting (CFLs), and considering the bulbs cost me considerably less than that I'm beginning to think it should be illegal to sell incandescents in this day-in-age. Anyway, I'll say more about it later. But, if you haven't already replaced your incandescent bulbs with CFLs, what are you waiting for?
